Black Pope is a raw punk band reigning from the northeastern region of Pennsylvania known as the Pocono’s. The band consists of four strong personalities who coexist menacingly through the noise they produce from their amplifiers, drums and vocals. Members include those who were in veteran regional bands such as Chemical Dependants, GDMF and Moscow Dynamo.
Overt, edgy, political, and dynamic would be perfect adjectives to describe Black Pope. The topics of their songs may seem controversial to those who choose to ignore the realities of life, but to the members of Black Pope, the songs reflect the positive and negative within everyday reality.
Songs such as “White Supremacy is for Pussies” is a harsh indictment of current “white America” and it’s seemingly indifferent perspective of its own repressive history. The song “Cloning Con Carne” laments about the everyday grinds of life while failing to see the purpose in it all. This band does not perform to please the masses; they play to confront the masses while destroying the ordinary, and enjoy doing it.
Their musical sound demonstrates influences from bands like “The Quincy Punx” to “The Clash,” from “Leftover Crack” to “The Descendents.” Through the wide array of musical influences comes a sound that manifests a unique blend of old school punk and a fresh modern direction that leaves the listener enthusiastically craving more. No they aren’t “Emo,” they most definitely aren’t “pop punk,” and your parents definitely won’t approve of them.
